Once again, we are reminded of the importance of Spellcheck in journalism, and why there has never been a “Wheel of Fortune” champion from Mississippi…
I was a journalist, humor columnist, writer and editor at Siuslaw News for 23 years. The next chapter in my own writer’s journey is helping other writers prepare their manuscript for the road ahead. I'm married to the perfect woman, have four great kids, and a tenuous grip on my sanity...

You’ve got to be kidding. Missippi has trouble with literacy? I thought they were ranked higher than Calirnia and Kentuy.
Poor Mississippi, I have sadly exposed some of Mississippi myself, you can see it here http://loveandanthropology.wordpress.com/2012/03/12/mississippi/
Maybe we are setting that state to fail by giving it such a sometimes difficult name to spell out? All the ‘s’ and ‘p’s are confusing to some…
They have no excuse. It’s the only state whose name has so much iambic rhythm they even have a SONG to help them remember how to spell it! No sympathy here…
That’s what I was saying to another blogger! It’s the only state with enough iambic rhythm to have its own song! There’s just no excuse. Pack your stuff, I’m booking you and your class a flight to Mississippi…

Ya, whoo new, rite?

That’s a real compliment — Thanks so much!

Fantastic post! Personally, I like their spelling better. Mississippi has far too many syllables for my taste.

Hahaha, you’re right, absolutely right.
LOL! I don’t understand how mistakes like that get missed, honestly. 😛
Yeah! It’s not like it’s so big you can’t see the whole thing at once, like writing on the side of a mountain with a chisel.
Ha!
Loved it!!
That spelling may change the time required to count in hide and seek – more seconds may have to be allotted to make up for the lack of syllables!!
LOL! I think I had some friends when I was growing up who were already using that technique!
Haha….they had an unfair advantage!!
I think they skipped Mississippi altogether and counted “One Idaho..two Idaho…three Idaho…”
At least they didn’t use Maine….that would have been a quick game!
Wow, you’re RIGHT! Where were you when I was 10! Wait… don’t answer that. I have a feeling it will make me feel very old 😉
I doubt that….I’ll be 44 at the end of March….I’m no spring chicken!! Just by saying I’m no spring chicken, I aged another 20 years!!
LOL!!
MI – SSI -SSI -PPI!!!! maybe my 4 and 5 year old class can teach them the song and it will help them remember how to spell it next time )
